Default Need tips on fishing river from bank

The drought here in the midwest has really depleted my local river. There are still some good holes but they are hard to get to. I normally fish this river for smallmouth by boat, but I can't get my boat in anymore. I can climb down the steep riprap bank, but moving up and down the bank will be treacherous. I could use some advice on how to approach the holes. Do I position myself on the downstream side, cast up and let the woolly bugger/clouser drift down? If I am fishing with standard tackle I sit upstream and retrieve a jig or crankbait against the current. Would that work with flies? What do you guys suggest?

Bass, fish it on the swing, meaning get above the holding water then do your best to put it strait out. Allow the current to swing the fly in a big arc and let it dangle at the end, thats when many a hit will come.
