Default Re: Favorite gill flies?

I have a hard time fishing for 'gills and NOT using a Madam X. They can be fished dry, in the film or sunk with ease and success.
I also like small buggers. I tie them up using nothing but arctic fox fur.
Another getter for me is a rubber-legged dragon fly. I understand dragon fly nymphs swim towards shore to hatch so that plays right into my game when shore fishing.
I love me some bluegill fishing!

Yellow craft foam spider, Yellow 1//4" dia popper, Yellow body soft hackle, McGinty soft hackle, Blind Squirrel......almost any fish will eat the Blind Squirrel.....Size 10 is mostly used but I do use from size 6 to 14. I have caught some nice gills on a size 4 or 2 Mickey Finn. Go figure. I also caught a gill on a 5/8oz black Jitterbug night fishing for bass.

Here are some pictures of my very own Fly Guy pattern. It has been the most successful pattern I've created. Bream and small bass can't say no to it.

You can use different color chenille, but I prefer the one from the pictures that has built in flash flecks. Because of the rising action when water flows under the wings, the fly will cover all parts of the water column depending on your retrieve speed.

That's the fly you were using when you twisted your leader into knots

Rip: It actually was not, but I know where you are coming from with the wings and line twist. The small wings on these flies have rarely caused me any line twist issues.

I tie a #10 bugger with black rabbit fur cut from a zonker strip for the tail... black uv ice dubbing.. and grizzle hen hackle for a collar with a matching brass beadhead... absolutely slays the gills
