Most often I use:
5wt rod 8'6"
About 6' of 0x fluorocarbon leader
And whatever floats and goes gurgle when you give it a tug.
Poppers, mouse, dragonfly, anything that will make them angry really.
The 5 makes a nice fight out of any bass espcially when you get into one that's in the 18-19" range.
However, going with a 7wt makes picking up the line and throwing the heavy fly easier so you spend less time with your fly in the air.

Love topwater smallmouth in June.

That's a nice bass. What kind of canoe are you fishing from? I have a Wenonah Heron that I poke around the reservoirs and is good solo or tandem. The canoe is part of my Bass Gear load out. I usually take a 6wt GLoomis and a 6wt Allen. One is set up with poppers and the other buggers, usually. It just helps to have two rods setup.

It's a 17' souris river canoe. We pack in a 2 horse motor to get across the lake to the good spots.
