Default Another goal down

After trying for two years I just crossed off another goal. A nice channel catfish.

It measured in at 16 1/2 inches and put up quite the fight. The fight made the golf tourny going on the other side of the lake stop and watch. Took this pic and back into the water it went.

Wow, that definitely is a worthy goal to have achieved with a fly rod, congrats!

Funny thing is earlier I had something on the hook, either a carp or another cat, that broke my leader at my loop to loop connection. It was really making my drag scream.

I had a big one on once. It started taking line, so I was letting it out, and a loop got caught on my reel and pop the fish was gone. I had brought in a 24" freshwater drum that put up a good fight, but this one was on a whole different level.

Channel Cats are fun. They roll and flop and put up quite a fight.

Indeed! Nice fish! It amazes me that people consider some species "trash". Really? Hook them on a fly rod and you'll have a good time. I used to look down my nose at saltwater cats until I started fly fishing rather than using heavy spinning gear. Now, I'd still as soon avoid catching one due to the slime and their toxic spines, but darned if they don't put up a good fight. They are a strong solid fish. They're not something I look for, but I don't complain when I hook one either. Its usually on a brown clouser or a crab or shrimp pattern. Nice catch on a fly in fresh water.
