Hit the Trifecta today.

I got to go out for about 2 hours this afternoon. So having caught my first cat last Sunday, I grabbed my fly rod and head back down for more. After quite a few bluegills which were all about 6 inches long, this monster decided that it wanted in on the fun..

It measured in at 16 inches. I was quite surprised as I have never caught any LMB this size out of where I was before.

Then after a few more gills. This rare (for this body of water) fish showed up.

It was only 8 inched but this is the 3rd one I've caught out of this pond in the last 3 years.

And on the last cast before it was time to go.. This beast hit and we had a 15 minute battle before it tired.

It measured in at 23 inches and is only 1/2 inch smaller then my personal best cat caught on any type of rod.

Even with battling with wind with fly rod today was a great way to start the week. Oh yeah all the fish were caught with the same fly. I never had to change it once today.

Very cool man. If it weren't for all weird exotics we have down here now, that would be the freshwater grand slam in Fl. Still is if you only count natives.:worthy:

The worst part of the day was the wind.. It was blowing at about 25 mph nearly constantly. The only thing I have yet to catch out of that pond is a carp but with the cats I've been getting lately I don't care about no stinky carp :p

If you're catching them for the frying pan, I agree. If you're fishing for fun, you should rethink your perception of carp. I was brought up and taught to hate carp, and somewhat bass too. The only thing worthy of being on the table was walleye, followed by catfish and salmon; and if it wasn't worthy of being on the table it was trash fish.

Fast forward 30+ years, now that I mostly fish for fun I will target carp on occasion. They are a lot of fun on a fly rod.

What fly did you catch them on if I may ask?

I made up an olive DDH Leech (or my best copy) with dumbell eyes. The reason I used the dumbell eyes instead of bead chain is to get it to sink faster.

I was j/k about the carp. I would love to hook one but this pond is not known for having clear water, so I would have a tough time sight fishing for them.

At the risk of offending the purists, try a little Gulp spray (yeah, yeah, bait fisherman I know). But, hear me out. Carp are like catfish and sharks. They feed on smell more than sight. If you can see them in clear water then be virginal and pure and treat them like redfish or bones. But if you need them to come to your fly and you can't see them and they can't see it? Good luck. So, put a little stink on the thing. Any large nymph, crawdad or generic bonefish pattern should work. A little bit of tinsel wouldn't hurt either as it improves visibility.
God, at this rate they'll probably give me a show following "Duck Dynasty". Anybody willing to grow a beard and be my sidekick/comic relief? :D:D:D

That's really great when that happens. The trifecta is tough any time. The last time I went out I was fortunate enough to get a Grand Slam. Bass, Perch, Crappie & Bluegill. They were all small, but still a Grand Slam. It's never happened to me before. Congratulations.
