Default First catches of the year

Calling this warm water fly fishing might be a stretch since this pond just thawed last week

I haven't been out since early January because I don't ice fish. My planned weekend on a stocked trout stream were ruined by flooding, so I headed to a local public pond with my 5wt. Took me about an hour and a half to catch these two bass and two more very small blue gills. One of the gills was so small I didn't realize it was on until it was flying towards my face on my back cast.
I caught the first bass on a green hot cone bugger. The larger of the two plus the two sun fish were caught on an eggi juan Kenobi.

This was actually the second pond I hit. The first one must have had a massive fish kill after the ice thawed. There were dead sun fish everywhere along the shore line.

Congrats on getting a bend in your rod feel better now, huh... You know what would've been funny is if a bass would've come along and took that little gill you didn't know was on, that would've been great!

First trip of the season is always great one. No matter the numbers or size of fish. Well done.

And I was able to fish up and over the dead cattails. I've fished this pond for a few years and by the end of last summer there was almost no access through them. The first bass was caught in one of the small open areas still left. The second one and the gills took a pretty high cast to get to them. At some point I'm going to need a kayak if I want to continue fishing it.
