Best fly patterns for smallmouth bass?

Can someone tell me some good flies for smallmouth bass? Now that I have a vise and some equipment I would like to get started. Thanks in advance, NRA

Clouser minnows, woolly buggers, Sneaky Pete's and zonkers should get you started. The best thing would be to stop at shop where you'll be fishing and ask them the same question. Local knowledge is a good thing.

Try the search function, there was a recent thread on exactly this topic.

If your looking to tie, look through Cabelas site and look under thier fly section. A lot of patterns there. Bass will hit almost anything that looks like a leach, minnow, craw, other small fish, or that triggers a predatory strike. A larger dry fly can be used like a poper and will work great. I got a few patterns for dry flies that should work great.

I flyfish the Susquehanna all the time for Smallmouth.

I've used Clousers and all the Crayfish imitations, but IMHO the Wooly Bugger is the best.

Easy to tie....... all you have to do vary the weight. I like lead hourglass eyes.

On the top, in summer, I like the foam head poppers the best.

A nicely tied WoolyBugger is better than a live minnow.

We have discussed this one before, I believe.
The brozebacks of Michigan have biten on just
about anything I've thrown. From a size 14 black
caddis, all the way up to big streamer flies. If they
are hungry just hold on. I especially like using any of
my tube flies that have lots of Marabou, or a black
rabbit strip leech.
