Default Anyone every catch one of these?

Orange Spotted Sunfish. If Iowa kept records for this species it may have been close to it. I don't know for sure but I think this one went about 6 inches. Iowa DNR says most reach about 4 inches.

This is the first time I've seen one, but that's a beauty of a fish.

I grew up calling them pumpkin seeds or red ears. Sunnies were the general term, covering bluegills and red ears, rock bass and crappie. Makes me want to hit the pond!!! I love a 3wt in June with a #12 green weenie hitting the spawn beds, fun fun stuff!!! Good eatin' too!

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm going to try and target them next season. This was more of a by-catch while fishing for gills and crappies. Guess a few were in the mix too

pumkinseed
I've been on a mission to catch the CT state record (19 oz) for some years now
This past spring was the closest I've come when I got a monster of about 9' and not quite a pound

Just looked on Wikipedia because I was curious. The pumpkinseed is species Lepomis gibbosus and the orange spotted sunfish is Lepomis humilis. They do look similar but technically are different species. Definitely not trying to be snobbish Good luck in your quest!!
