Default Gar fisherman ?????

I didnt want to steal Mcfly's thread, I was wondering what you all think about this fly. I read in the other gar post about nylon flies, so I made this and used a trailer hook seeing how I had a 3fter swipe my fly friday but kept missing it. Am I on the right track with this fly, also is spawning the best time to get them or they in the river all year???Thanks everyone.

Try flies like these. They are made of white rope from a stringer like you buy at walmart for a couple bucks. The thing with gar is there mouths are so damn tough and boney you cnat hardly get a hook into them, wich means you either let them swallow your bait wish thye wont do with a fly, or use something like this that will get tangled up in their teeth. I cut the hook at the bend after I ty the fly.
Good Luck

I think it would work ok, I just always used nylon. I think its a little stronger then cotton.

I know that if you leave the rope in their teeth, they will die if they cannot open their jaws. Aside from wearing gloves, how do you untangle the rope from their teeth?

The ones that I have caught came off pretty easy, one I had to use pliers and pick some rope off, but usally with gloves and just holding thefish down I can slide the stuff right off.

mine didn't work. Had four hits, let them run with it for a sec and then slowly pulled and the fly just came out. Maybe I had the wrong kind of rope? was just nylon boat rope from wallyworld cut to about 4 inches and burnt on one end I just tied the tippet to the rope, no hooks involved... Am I doing it wrong?
Had a HUGE gar hit my topwater deer hair last week but obviously no hookset... Came up from underneath it real slow and for a sec I thought it was the biggest smallie in the world!
