Default AZ/NM Native Trout Trip

Forum member mka and I planned a small stream fishing trip in hopes to catch both native arizona wild gila trout and native new mexico wild gila trout, in three days.

We planned to meet in arizona first with mike scouting a gila trout stream in new mexico on the way. I had a couple places to take mike at our arizona gila trout fishery.

On the way to arizona mike found that the forest road was closed weekdays to our new mexico gila trout destination. We planned a new destination in arizona using some info I read and the new mexico game and fish, where to fish map.

We had a blast. Mike caught his first wild gila trout in arizona. We didn't catch a new mexico gila trout at our unplanned destination. But we had a great time camping and exploring a new stream in new mexico. There's plenty more story to tell about our adventure. lol. Click the image to open in full size.

Thanks for the report, Steve! I had a blast and you were the perfect guide taking us into the wilderness for Gila Trout!!!!

After we left the Frye Mesa and in route to New Mexico, I experience a flat tire just outside of Silver City. Who keeps a tire patch kit and a compressor in their truck? Steve does I took the wheel off and Steve plugged the tire, aired it up, and we were back on the road for fishing. Amazing...I've never had a tire repaired right on the road. It got me back to Albuquerque no problem after we departed to our respective homes. Huge thank you goes to Steve!!!!

Now about that Rancher lady that wouldn't let Steve leave the scene of the crime

It was a fun trip indeed!!!!!!

It was and just for the record...there was no crime, just a rancher lady wanting to note for us exactly where the property lines were located, which we were not even on. I do believe she enjoyed talking to Steve, though

Hey I was just trying to get info. lol. I could tell during our interesting meet with the rancher lady that mike has a way with humans, and during his career must have been an awesome professional human resources specialist.

I'm still looking for the app the rancher lady insisted we get.

Say guys; Being that Apache and Gila Trout are high on my wish list, what sort of flies have you found best when fishing for them? The reason I ask is (not wanting to waste a trip fighting experienced advice), some species become rather particular as to what they eat. Thanks for any insight.

Thanks for the trip report, and for the record, I carry tire plug kits (even insisting on better level tools), tools and a compressor in my vehicles. A well placed plug will last the life of the tire. AAA roadside assistance is for rookies

I carry safetyseals permanent repair kit. Amazing I have never used it on my vehicles. But I have used about 50 seals helping others out mostly off road. Sometimes I use 15 at a time. lol.

Steve is the expert for this area....for me, I caught almost all of my trout on a #16 and #18 tan EHC and just a couple on a #16 hares ear nymph. The dry fly action is obviously the most fun!
