Barbless flies! I would think a slower rod that loads quicker would be easier to learn on for a kid who is still developing hand eye coordination.

Clever but the name does not always fit the description. I have a Featherlight. The 8'6" 5wt he has is graphite and its lighter

another vote for the featherlite. I just think a serviceable rod for that much $$$ makes too much sense for a child.
