GOING BACK AGAIN
by
Randy Kadish
They say you can't go back again. But I had tried. And I had reminisced about the great summers I had shared with old friends - Patti, Gerry, Bob - and I had spun into a black hole of grief; so when Margaret called and told me she had the beach house to herself, I told her I wasn't visiting.

The Little Things
by: Len Harris
My buddy Bob is 74 years old. Bob and I have fished together for about 15 years. On almost every outing he talks about his neighbor. Bob talks about the "Old Timer" that lives right next to him. I usually crack a smile when Bob calls someone an old timer. How old must someone be.... to be called an... [Read More]

Overlooking Midge Larva?
When it comes to stillwaters, few bugs matter as much in a trout’s diet as the midge. A true staple for trout, the midge will hatch all year on open water and up north, from ice-out, ‘til ice-on on most of our stillwater fisheries. There are four stages in the midge’s life cycle, these stages include the egg, larva, pupa... [Read More]

breathable waders and condensation |
|
Jul 23, 2008 - 6:30 PM - by hawkeye79

I purchased some hodgman wadelite breathable waders a few years ago. I have noticed that if I am chilled, often my legs are damp below the waterline. It's not a leak, I am not soaked, and it involves both legs. I chalked it up to the breathable membrane and my legs getting cold so not being warm enough to push water vapor out through the membrane, but I recently got my wife some Simm's breathable waders, and she does not have it happen. Now I am thinking it's time for new waders. Should one's legs be totally dry with breathable waders?

im looking to go salmon fishing in miramichi N.B next week while im on vacation. problem is i have never done it before have only trout fished. im looking to find a good 1 handed fly rod to catch atlantic salmon of all sizes. i have checked the local sports stores and they dont have much selection. i believe most of the fly rods they have are for trout fishing as they are rated 7wt. is a 7wt rod sturdy enough to land atlantic salmon? also can u tell me some of the more popular fly rods for salmon fishing. only brands i have come across is shimano, juniper, and fenwick, and think i seen a shakespear. i dont know what to look for any help would be much apreciated

which one of these fly rods do you guys think are good for a beginner. I thought i was getting a TFO rod but i heard some bad things saying there ugly rods, bad cork and other things. I've heard good and bad things about all of them. Which one do you think is the best value that will last me a while.
here are the websites for the rods:

The Odyssey; Like a Monet with Mussels on your reel seat. |
|

I must add yet another plug for the best big game reel I've ever owned. I have owned many fly reels for all types of fishing applications but once I hooked into a few fresh run Alaskan Kings I was forced to make some additions to my tackle.
When I first moved to Alaska I owned an Orvis Battenkill 8/9 disc drag reel. I had used the reel for Great Lakes Salmon for years and had managed to land many fish in combination with a 9' 9wt. rod. I had always held trepidations regarding the strength of the drag on the 8/9 disc. After a few years of battling with Alaskan Sea Run Kings using the old reel I began to search out something with a better drag system. When fishing close to the salt the fish are very strong and when they decide to run down river toward the ocean you need a very powerful reel to stop them. Drag and additional backing capacity were a driving force behind my decision to buy a pair of new Odyssey reels. I purchased both the Odyssey III and the IV.

Fly Fishing in a Kilt? |

Would anyone here ever consider wearing a kilt for fly fishing? The only reason why I ask is because I am designing a kilt to be worn for fishing. I have posted it on a few other sites that I post on and have gotten some mixed reviews.

I caught some Carp! |
|
Jul 23, 2008 - 11:41 AM - by dickensheets

I just moved from Houston to Loveland, Co. and was excited for all the new fishing opportunities in this part of the world. Anyway I got up one morning and walked 2 streets down to where I had spied a slow moving muddy creek that feeds a small lake in Loveland.
I suspected Bass and Catfish and maybe a walleye or two lived in there, but was excited to see a group of 18" Carp cruising and rooting in the mud. I unholstered the 6wt and fired a black wolly bugger about 10ft in front of their path and paused.......1st cast and 1 long strip and bam!!
I've never had that sort of luck with anything, especially fishing! It took me into my backing on the first run (first time for that too). After about 15min I had him wore out on the bank.
My first cast in Colorado was a memorable one.

Ffishing the Hatch |
|

This has bugged me for 3 weeks. When Lauri and I were in the Black Hills in early July there was a small caddis hatch in the evenings. I caught a few of the flies and they had an olivish body. So I put a olive elk winged caddis with an olive emerges as a dropper. Not on hit on the dry fly. We did catch fish on the emergers.
We were careful to not bee seen. We tried different presentations, sized flies, tippet size, colors, dries alone and no hits.
I've have rarely fished a hatch. In the past I have had a few hits during March Brown or caddis hatches on the Lower Mountain Fork. But very few.
Any ideas what to change?

Anybody making their own leaders?
I was just reading Joni’s blog and saw that she is making her own leaders and remembered a recipe I found in Gary Borger’s book Presentations so I bought a few rolls of mono to give it a shot.
Dry fly leader – for size 10-14 fly. 4 feet of 0.013, 1 foot 0.010, and 4 feet of 4X or 0.007
Dry fly leader – for size 20 or smaller. 1 foot 0.013, 4 feet 0.010,4 feet of 0.007, and 1 foot of 6X or 7X
A 15 foot leader – for size 16. 5 feet of 0.017, 5 feet of 0.013, 1 foot of 0.010, 3 feet of 0.007 and 1 foot of 0.005.
A windy situation 15 foot leader – 10 feet of 0.017, 1 foot of 0.012, 3 feet of 2X... [Read More]

Reel Question... |
|
Jul 22, 2008 - 2:02 PM - by sesro1978
|
Hi-
Is it ok (ok meaning will it hurt to) put a smaller weight line on a fly reel made for a larger weight fly line? Say if I found a mid to large arbor reel on eBay that was made for a 8 or 10 weight line but wanted to load it with a 7-weight line (because the reel is such a good deal); would that cause any negatives other than the reel being a bit big?
Thanks for any help or advice!
~Seth
