Guidelines for matching rods, lines, leaders, tippets and flies |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 10:29 AM - by txbevo
|
I have some general questions regarding matching rod weight, line weight, leaders, tippets and flies. On my way back from a trip yesterday I stopped at a small lake late in the afternoon and decided to wet a line. I had my 4 wt and 6 wt in the car and I decided to pull out the 4 wt as I thought my chances were mostly going to be for sunfish. Turns out the only flies I had with me were size 10 through 6. I put on a conehead woolly bugger and could not cast it to save my life. I am new to all of this so this was my first experience trying to throw a bigger fly with a smaller rod. I'm sure my newbie casting skills played a large part in my demise, but it was catastrophic. I got such a tangled mess on my leader with the light waning that i had to just cut if off. Anyway when I got home I did some reading and found some things that talked about matching tippets with flies, etc... So I have some questions:
I read somewhere that a general rule of thumb is to divide the size of... [Read More]

Different subcategories of Fishing boats!! |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 6:16 AM - by russell
|
Friends,
Here's a few Fishing boats related talk that i'd like share with you.
Fishing boats fall into four subcategories.
The first subcategory is the Canoe. Canoes are usually made of aluminum and they have very distinctive shapes where it can easily be moved by its users on water by the rowing actions of paddles. It entails a balanced and rhythmical type of rowing which cannot be done by many.
The second subcategory is the Rowboat. Rowboats are in the form of a semi-V-shape. Most are made up of aluminum and there are some that are made out of wood. They are usually no more than 14 feet long and usually have benches along the side where people can sit and fish from. Rowboats are moved either by using a pair of oars (one on each side) or attaching a small engine to the rear.
The third subcategory is the Johnboat. Johnboats are from 10 to 18 feet long which is always proportional to its width. Most of them are also made of... [Read More]

I dont quite understand the reasoning behind SAGE'S BASS ROD.......... |
|
Nov 20, 2008 - 1:11 AM - by SouthFlorida FlyGuy
|
Specifically the length. I understand that they made it just under the legal length to allow for tournament use but is that just marketing rubbish?? I mean, how many people are truly going to whip out there fly rod in a bass tournament?? Probably not many if any at all.
I know people enjoy using the 7'11 length for fishing here around the mangroves for smaller redfish, snook, tarpon, etc..It allows greater precision when casting.
Another question. Couldn't I just pickup a TFO 9ft. 8wt with some 10-11wt line and achieve similar results as the SAGE BASS ROD? Wouldnt I get even more distance on my casts with wind resistant flies and poppers on a 9' rod??

I tried searching thru a few local bookstores on any way to find out any reports for season hatching dates specific to the northern New Mexico area, and also i searched thru this forum, but didnt find anything....
I'm gonna be in the Northern part of New Mexico much of this winter and most of next spring/summer and i'm trying to get as much info as possible for the streams in that area. I was wondering if you guys knew if it was possible to look up online for up-to-date hatching reports.

To bead or not to bead... |
|
Nov 19, 2008 - 4:43 PM - by Alligator

This fall I was fishing with my wife when she asked me, "What's the advantage of nymphing with a bead-head nymph over using a shot weight?"
Well, I'm not sure. I usually use a bead-head nymph, sometimes with a shot to go deeper. (He said to the bartender, "Give me a nymph with a shot on the side.") But I suppose an unbeaded nymph might have better action. In that I can not interview a fish, what do y'all think?

Brook Trout Spawning Question |
|
Nov 19, 2008 - 3:04 PM - by jcl
|
|
This year I started fishing in central VA (primarily in the Shenandoah National Park) for brookies. I've seen several sources recommending giving the fish a break starting in early or mid-October once they start spawning, which seems reasonable enough, esp. to protect a wild fish population. What none of the sources I've seen say is when it's safe to get back in these creeks. Anyone out there have any opinions on this matter?

Fishing in California |
|

Friends,
When you are in California, the sport fishing in California has a lot to offer every angler, there are many areas that are known for great fishing and there is the approximate 1,100 miles of ocean coast line and the miles and miles of ocean water that is waiting to be fished. There are also miles of ponds, rivers and lakes in California, along with catch and release preserves.
The fish when deep sea fishing will excite any angler with all the charters that are available it is not hard to find where the fish are waiting to be caught. The yachts that can be chartered for the day or the week for sport fishing, to cruise on the open ocean to where the sport fishing California really is located. Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna and Swordfish are on the list of fish waiting in the Pacific for the deep water angler to give them a good fight before getting reeled into the boat.

SA Saltwater Sharkskin line??? |
|
Nov 19, 2008 - 12:38 AM - by mireland
|
|
I'm new to saltwater fly fishing and am looking to purchase a 9 wt. floating line. I feel like I've read enough about the SA Sharkskin line and its shootability that I have decided to purchase it. The SA site and some other sites I have read suggest that this line performs well in tropical conditions. I live in Southern California, and while I'm not worried about its functionability during the summer in 70 to 75 degree water, has anybody had any experience with this line down in the 60 to 65 degree range? Is that even something I should worry about? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I might be coming into an older South Bend bamboo rod soon.
Can anyone recommend somebody who repairs/restores bamboo rods that won't make my thin wallet scream?
Much less the wife....

Japan on the Fly |
|
Nov 18, 2008 - 9:49 PM - by Pocono

I just got back from a business trip to Japan and while I was there I managed to sneak in a couple of days fishing on one of their steep gradient mountain freestone streams Northeast of Tokyo. I fished with a person that I met on the internet; Hideto Yoshida, a real trout afficionado who loves to fish for wild trout in these mountain streams.
He picked me up at my hotel in Tokyo at 4:00AM and by 7:30AM we had reached our destination; high up in the mountains near the picturesque town of Nikko. Once we got there, the first challenge was to see if you were "balanced" enough to even get to the fishing (see below pic of the "bridge" to the lodge).

Once across the stream (yes, I made it!), you were at the lodge (below). Very simple, very quaint, very friendly.

NEW HERE & Wanted to introduce myself!! |

Hello everyone!
I came across this site and have been snooping around the past couple weeks. I finally joined because of the great info I have been reading and the style of the site reminds me of my other Bass Site I belong too.
I'm Jonathan. I'm a South Florida native who has grown up Bass Fishing with baitcasting equipment ever since I was 10. I'm now 32 years of age. I grew up bank fishing around golf courses, neighborhood lakes and ponds, and of coarse the Florida Everglades.
I decided to book a trout guide a few months ago while visiting N.C. with my family. Well, all I can say is after arriving back in Florida, I felt as if I was missing something? I did not want to wait until my next trip to N.C. to pickup a fly rod again, so I walked into BPS and decided to purchase a 5WT 9' middle of the range TFO rod and a great deal on a Mid Arbor Redington CD 7/8reel spooled up with an awesome weight forward line.
I'm new to fly fishing... [Read More]
