Beulah Platnium Series 12'6" 6 Weight Spey |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 8:55 PM - by MoscaPescador
|
I was asked by my friend who manages a fly shop to test out a Beulah Platinum Series Spey rod. It was the 12'6" 6 weight 4 piece model. It retails in the shops for $560. This rod is made to target trout in big rivers and summer Steelhead. It would also make a great choice for the "halfpounder" run of juvenile Steelhead and American Shad.
The first thing that I noticed was premium rod like finish. It was clean. The rod guide wraps looked smooth. The rod cork felt like top quality cork. All the hardware (guides, reel seat) was top quality.
What I noticed about its casting was that it has a full flex. I felt it flex all the way down to the cork. I'm used to a stiffer Euro flex, so I had to back off my stroke a tad. Once I got settled, I found the Platinum Series Spey a dream to cast. I fished this rod effectively with 60 foot casts (that's all I needed). I felt positive that I could have thrown 80 feet. The best that I could... [Read More]

Just got into fly fishing and figured I would purchase some equipment. Looked on here and got hundreds of different ideas...Ended up with a Albright A5 5wt rod and a Lamson Konic Reel. Got some Trinity waders from albright (duck hunting ones did not cut it). SA Lefty Kreh line from cabela's. Now got to put it together...
How much backing should I put on...
Does it go arbor knot then nail knot for backing to fly line..
Also how is the q]equipment that I bought...Decent stuff ???

any other rods I should check out please mention them.

Does anyone here tie these???? I've tied several, and they seem to be an easy flie and incorporate a few common materials. If anyone else here ties these flies SPEEK UP!!!!!!!!! Post some pics. I'll try to get mine up. Hate tryin' to find a good background I tie the version incorporating:
Black 8/0 thread
Pheasant Tail fibres (for the tail)
Peacock Herl (for the body)
Gold oval tinsel (ribbing)
Peacock Rump Feathers, the ones found at the base of the tail. (for the hackle)
I tie 'em on any streamer hook, but I like Mustad R74s and Tiemco 600s.
Lookin' forward to the replies,
Steelhead Junkie.

Hi all,
Great to be here, I am new to this area in Bellevue. If anyone could guide me to a good fishing location for bank fisherman like in skykomish in sultan or snoquilmie river in Fall city. I heard about this two river but have no idea how to get to a good location on those rivers.
Appreciate your help. Tide line all.
Thanks.

Caught a Striper at the Local Creek! |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 11:15 AM - by FrankB2
|
The local creek (Neshaminy Creek: Bucks County, PA) runs into the Delaware
River and is tidal for the first few miles. Stripers and even blue claw crabs
come up this section of the Neshaminy, and while I've seen both, it wasn't
until last evening that I caught a striper...albeit smallish:

The fish was caught with my 90% of the time #10 olive Wooly Bugger. He
made several runs, and I thought I had a smallmouth. I'd love to catch one
of the huge stripers that can be seen travelling along this stretch of the
Neshaminy. I was using an 8'6" 5wt, and this little guy bent that rod more
than once ... [Read More]

Flies for the Huron River in SE Michigan |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:58 AM - by Flyfisher for men
|
I will be in the Pinckney, MI area July 29-Aug. 11th and thought about hitting the Huron. What sort of flies should I be thinking for smallmouth bass? Also, if there are any hatches around that time? I'll have all the forms of Hexagenia my vest though my reading suggests I may be a little late for that hatch. Can anyone confirm?
I do have a Chernobyl Ant I'm working on. Also, buggers galore as well as a crayfish imitation.

Getting flies tied |
|

I have a fly pattern that a local gentleman ties. He said it's registered under his name but he won't tie a bunch up for me at any price. The pattern is called the Neutria. It's a fantastic go to pattern in which I've probably caught 80% of my trout on it in the past 10 yrs. The gentleman who came up with it and ties it will only give you a couple now and then but he's 80 now and looking pretty frail. So, how would I go about getting this pattern matched and tied?

ugh im having trouble getting a vise |
|
Jul 01, 2009 - 11:56 PM - by flyfisher117

ok so i was going to get a griffin blackfoot mongoose vise for 80 bucks but then it was all sold out so now that idea is down the drain...but anyways is the blackfoot worth the 145 dollars or should i save my money and by something like a danvise? the reason i want a griffin vise so bad is becase of 2 reasons one is made in us of a and 2 is it has lifetime gurantee
i dont really want to spend that much just because im low on pretty much all of my tying materials and the cheaper the vise the more i can restock
so is the griffin worth it..will the danvise give me at least 5 years of happy tying? or should i just stick with me 30 dollar cabelas special vise that doesnt always hold hooks the tightest?
thanks again
