Well I have never seen anything like that before but then again I am not from VA. I did some quick looking and I found this. (hope the picture works)

This is called a river redhorse (there are all sorts of types of redhorse so you could check them), that is if it is the fish you are talking about. Seemed to match the discription close but not sure if they are found in VA and they do get quite big. It is also one of the closest things I could find that looks sort of goldfishish although this has fins that are completely red and not red tipped and minus the vertical markings. Thought I would give it a try.

I remember the first time I caught a chub, I had no idea what it was and just had to know so I took it over to the person I was fishing with and asked them. Their response was "thats just an ugly chub", he's right it was an ugly thing.

I agree with Ard check the fish commission they would know.
