Hi tob1,

I have been very impressed with some of your flies. You seem to be very inventive and original in some of them. Keep up the good work and thanks for the great pictures.

Well, Tob1, I'm a fan of cdc and use it quite often. As I said before, I like your work and the tips you give, such as that hot glue technique you use. Is the VAG filter from a VAG car filter or is it something else?

tob1
09-28-2008, 11:09 AM
The VAG filter is the pollen filter (indoor air filter) in the VW car. It is colored by hand and sold in Norway.

jose
09-28-2008, 12:55 PM
Thanks. I thought it was a pollen filter and was wondering about the color. I might take apart a Honda pollen filter and color it with...er...maybe marker...to see if that works.

One way to make a more realistic wing is to use the foam that protect the screen on new computers. Fold the foam around the hackle on place the foam between two paper. Use a hot iron on the paper.

Tob1, I finally got some CDC and was tying some caddis tonight with it. I have a question. How much CDC does it take to be effective as an additional floatant. I like the "buggy" effect it has but eg. elk hair caddis with normal pattern elements...how many barbs of CDC is needed to go past simply "buggy looking" and actually add noticable amounts of boyancy? I won't have a chance to hit any fast water for a couple weeks to test and want to tie a few successful good floaters, size 14 & 16 mostly, and don't like the look if I go to heavy with it.

JJ

tob1

Normally I use 2-3 feathers on a fly. Do not use an ordinary floatant with CDC - the fibers will clump together and the fly will sink. Use CDC oil or floatant that is recommended for CDC. After a fish take, wash the fly in the river and let it dry. You may use Amadou or similar products for removing the water out the fly. Tip. Allways ultra (or similar womens product) is a nice product for removing the water from the fly. It is not the oil in CDC that make it float, it is the fibre structure in the the feathers , but the oil condition the fibres. Black CDC need CDC oil, since the coloring prosess remove all oil from the feathers. God CDC oil is Marck Petitjean CDC oil and HENDS CDC oil.
Dry Shake and similar products also help.
Hope this help.
