I learned how to weave thread onto a hook for the body recently. What do ya think of this little guy? I think it's the best fly I have ever tied so far. I just had to show it off to ya!!

That does look great. You'll have to let us know how it fishes. Unless it's just for the shadow box... :icon_wink

Somewhere ... there's a smallmouth dreaming of a warm summer morning and the chance that a crawdad might come swimming by.

Gwater,

That is a good piece of tying. Things like this are what keep me prowling the fly tying forum here, I enjoy seeing all of the terrific vise craft displayed herein.

I am not by any means being critical when I say that if you either lacquer or treat the pheasant (claws) with tough feather they will take a better shape for you. They will also retain the shape of claws when they are submerged. You may want to try doing this to a few pre cut feathers to see what I'm talking about.

Feather Tough is available through; Cascade Crest Tools - Fly tying materials and tools since 1978 - Home (http://www.cascadecrest.com/)

That's Cascade Crest Tools they are a fly tying supplier and the stuff (Feather Tough) is great for treating all sorts of feathers. I use it to treat duck wing quill pairs prior to using sections for wings on dry flies. It keeps them from splitting when you are pairing the sections and applying them to the fly. It also helps them to withstand repeated attacks from trout that take the fly.

I hope you find this information helpful and again, nice tying,

Ard

Thanks, Hardyreels!

I always hope I get some sort of criticism when I post flies. That is the purpose of posting I think. Thank you for the compliment and the tip. I wasn't going to fish that particular fly cause it turned out so nice. I had always just lived with the fact that the fish will ruin the feathers and you just had to get a new one. I will definatly get some of the feather tough and use it on my claws.

Thanks again!

tgood,

Please don't take what I suggested as a criticism of your vise work. I was / am just passing along a trick I picked up back in 1981 from instructions on tying the Moose Mane Crayfish from an issue (Sept 81) Fly Fisherman Magazine.

Lacquering the pheasant feathers after you trim them into the basic 'V' shape just kinda shrinks then into a nice claw shape for you. After I was turned on to Feather tough I began using it instead of lacquer cement.

The fly is cool dude.
