i talked to my cousin last night.(a taxidermist) he said that the 2 main ways to do it. one is to just freeze the pelt. the other was to go and buy some farm salt at any farm store. he said around here it's about $5 for 30-40 lbs. rub the salt into the hide and elevate the pelt to dry. he said that you could also use a fan to speed up the drying. the elevation is important however. he said that this allows the moisture and any blood in the hide to drain off.(don't do in the house might make the wife mad) gave the same info to bigdon last night at work and going to try it this winter with him. will let everyone know how it works out.

Just to clarify, when you say elevate, do you mean to have the thing in a vertical position while it cures? It seems liike this orientation would be best for fluids to drain from it.

Seems like one hell of allot of work for something you can get relatively cheap from most any online fly fishing store..

Just wondering how you made out with your experience and if you may have any pointers.
I currently have a piece of deer pelt and moose that I want to prepare for fly tying. This is my first time trying this.
For the moose I made a solution of salt and water and let it soak for a week or so. I have just taken it out of the solution and stretched it and put some salt on it now I will wait and see what happens when it dries.
I just got the piece deer today. It is from a 3 day old kill. I have just taken that and stretched it out on piece of plywood and salted it.
I read a lot about freezing and I am wondering if I should roll this up and put it in the freezer for a week and start over.

Just get as much fat off then cover in borax(found in the soap area) (20 muleteem) let dry between some newspaper and a heavy object (to keep flat) wait a week or 2...done...
