Anybody know how long it might be before the streams between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo might have a low enough flow to fish? I saw Piru creek was at 6000 cfs a couple of days ago.

I hope not. Fishing has been tough. The streams are too high and the ocean is full of silt and disease causing refuse from all the runoff.
Oh well, could be worse. I was in Minnesota two weeks ago and the only thing going there is ice fishing.... hard to even roll cast inside that hut.

Hello all West-Coasters!

I am one of those damn Texans but was out in SoCal in December.

I made the drive from San Diego up to Orange County and couldn't help but notice all those streams/rivers that pour into the Pacific that flow under I-5. Some of them looked like PRIME estuaries to me, and looked as though they would have massive amounts of gamefish at least part of the year. I was just wondering if any of you folx had experience fishing those areas and if they were productive.

Oh, and after seeing San Diego, why in the world does every body want to live in LA and not in SD?

I only got to fish off of the Shelter Island Pier while I was there, and found even that pier to be quite enjoyable. Caught only bratwurst sized mackerel, but I have never had any fish move like that when pulled out of the water.

My parents have property in San Gregorio (northern Cali) on the coast. Yes those waters hold fish but you have to hike away from the coast a couple miles to get them. Small during the year and larger when the runs hit.

fshfanatic: i found your post especially interesting due to the fact that I haven't seen "Gregorio" many other places.

A good friend of mine has the last name, Gregorio. i'm sure she would be intrested tp learn more about the San Gregorio area. (ps her family owns a house within walking distance of the confluence of the Roaring Fork and the Frying Pan. i'm not kidding.)

San Gregorio is about 40 miles south of San Francisco along the Coast. Near Half Moon Bay. North of Santa Cruz.

There are some very nice fishing areas between San Diego and Orange counties. Fly fishing is productive for most of them. Striped bass, corbina, halibut, barred perch, yellow finned croaker etc. In the summer months on through fall, you can find mackeral, bonito (false tunny), barracuda, and other sportier fish that will hit a fly (if you think a small mackeral really moves out, try a 5 lb bonito on a fly, you'll never forget it).
There are several good books out that will give you pointers and general areas if you happen to be out that way again.

If it in fact just opened, in my experiance it is best to wait about a week or so. The little ones come in first.
