  1. On the Boat, Part II

Im enjoying these boat excursions lately with my buddy Rick. Im almost always fishing out of a kayak in the saltwater, so fishing from a 22 center console is a nice change of pace.

Weve had a week, a few days of cold for us weather. Nights dipped into the 20s, 24 briefly was the bottom at my house and there were a couple of days where the temperature never cracked 40 sandwiched between a couple that hovered around the mid forties.

All that unusual cold and the ...

  2. Hybrid Vigor

    Or otherwise known as heterosis.

    heterosis
    [het-uh-roh-sis]
the increase in growth, size, fecundity, function, yield, or other characters in hybrids over those of the parents.

  3. Torn Between the Waters

I have been, at least for the last 11-12 years, all about the inshore saltwater scene first with lures and plugs and then later fly tackle. The saltwater set my heart ablaze when I lived at Surfside Beach for three years starting back in 2006. I could and frequently did walk out either front or back door, down the stairs, take a right and 75 yards of dragging a kayak across the packed sand, I was in prime redfish habitat. Or I could and frequently did take a left and 5 blocks later, I was on the ...

  4. Rivers Change Day by Day

Where I live there are a wide variety of saltwater fish haunts. Within 30 minutes of my house, I could be slinging flies in a marsh, bay, pass, harbor, river, creek, you get the idea. Last weekend, it was a river I found myself in. See, the day before, my good buddy went out on this same stream and jumped a couple of 3-4 foot Tarpon, caught a 4 pound snook, all along with racking up several stud speckled trout in the 4-5pound range and a couple of beefy redfish. Where do I sign up for action like ...

  5. The Battle Continues

So I thought I knew what I was doing. Today looked like lay up, slam dunk, easy peasy fishing. It's October, prime time, and the water was low. The area a redfish could call home suddenly shrunk by tens of thousands of acres because the water got low thanks to a westerly wind. I stacked the deck by going to a reliable low water spot.

Things started out better than okay. Some nice guy with a good spirit was at the launch fishing and crabbing and enjoying the chamber of commerce weather. ...
