Winter Fishing in Western Wyoming

Rate this Entry
I went fishing yesterday, decided to take advantage of this incredibly warm weather we have been experiencing (I sure hope we don't pay dearly this summer with another dreadful fire season). This is that time of year in the west where the animals are in full migration mode, so I time the departure from the house so I can see the sides of the roadway clearly (having one near miss with a big bull moose is enough), that said, I left the house a little before 7 am, first stop was at Daniel Junction for gas and to get a breakfast burrito before heading south. The car temperature gauge said to is 19 degrees, but I wasn't worried as the high was forecast to be 49 degrees. Yahoo! Is this February or am I in some sort of time warp?
When I get to the river it is only 26 degrees, but no wind (a rarity for Wyoming) and I just get this feeling it is going to be a fantastic day. Being retired, I don't really enjoy fishing weekends with the crowds.
Here is a shot of the river looking north. Its hard to see in the photo, but there is one fly fisherman just to the north of the island, another one on the east side (right side of the river) and then another one on the west side underneath that dark cliff at the top). As you can see it was pretty hard moving around in all that snow, LOL! If we don't get more snow this is going to be a terrible summer.

Here is a shot of the river looking south, not a single sole to be found. Looks like I will be fishing to the south and enjoying the river all to myself. Yahoo!

Later in the afternoon, we even had a drift boat out (totally unheard of in February):

The fishing was pretty consistent right off the bat, so I tried a few different patterns, all nymphing and then did a little exploring trying to find some new spots and boy did that pay off big time. I struck out there yesterday, but that place has got to be a hidden gem if I ever saw one, I can't wait until the hatches start coming off.
Here are a few of the fish that I landed yesterday, lost a few others do to LDR's and a broken hook, landed a couple whitefish but didn't bother taking any photos.
