Default Heading to the cowlitz river

Were getting ready to leave for Seattle Jan 6 for to visit the in laws, and made plans to fish with the wifes uncle on the cowlitz river which flows behind his house. I guess were float fishing it for steel/salmon or whatever we can catch...lol. This is my first time Fly fishing the west coast and very excited. Will post pics of HOPEFULLY a fish but if not at least some scenery pictures.

    Hi Kruggy1,

You will find that fishing the West Coast is a bit different than the way you have been fishing. You probably can expect some bigger fish. I have never fished the Cowlitz River but it has a good reputation. There is some concerns that the Cowlitz is being charged with volcanic debris from the Toutle River. The Toutle River drains Mt St Helen and empties into the Cowlitz. This should not be a problem if you are fishing the Coast but over the years it could affect the Cowlitz.

I hope you have a great trip and catch a good size Steelhead.

    Kruggy,

Like Frank said it'll be different, and like Frank I don't know that river. I hope you get lucky and find it is a broad one with plenty of good runs to swing. How close to the ocean will you be? That will make a difference in the fish. Better stock u[p on West Coast patterns dude!
