  1. Default Wooly Bugger Sizing?

What size should I tie my wooly buggers in? what size works best for you guys? I mostly fish the middle provo so all sizes of trout are what I am after. I've never been big into wooly buggers but after everyone raving about streamer fishing when nymphing isnt going well I figure I should probably give it a try. Thanks!

Middle Provo would be sizes 10 or 8, but there are a lot better ways to fish that river than with buggers. A good 2-nymph setup under an indicator would be my choice with a baetis and/or sowbug offering.

I fish, therefore I am - but I gotta go to work first..."piscari ergo sum"

In the western Sierra's my catch rate went up when I started tying smaller buggers. Size 12 is my "go-to" (standard to 2 xl length). We are probably targeting smaller fish over here.

I won't comment on sizing since Kelly is your local source. I will just add a story.

A friend of mine went to Campeche, Mexico, to fish for tarpon. He asked me to tie a bunch of Campeche Specials for him. Just for fun, I tied a size 2/0 tan Woolly Bugger on a Trey Combes saltwater hook. The Campeche Specials caught a lot of fish for him, but the oversized Woolly Bugger caught his largest fish. It was a 125 pound tarpon.

yeah thats what I have been using, and its been getting slightly frustrating with the last few outings not being good at all, so I figured I'd try something else, and there is a real nice area we fish that seems like it would be a good spot to give it a try.

Dennis, cool story! I don't use buggers very often for LM bass, for Smallmouths, I use them more, but have tied them on 2/0 straight shank plastic worm hooks & caught LM's & Striper's with them in brackish water. They can be very versatile!

rjw, if you're interested in different versions of buggers, get a copy of the book "Woolly Wisdom" by Gary Soucie. There's a ton of them in there!

Not exactly a woolly bugger because of the barbell eyes but same basic recipe tied on a 3/0 circle hook, 4.5" long, Striped Bass inhale them so I would say it's a pretty universal pattern.

The best way to a fisherman's heart is through his fly.

I think the size depends on where you are fishing and what you are fishing for. On small creeks i use a 10 or 12. On lakes i will go up to size 6.
