I've been recommended by a guide to pop flies for steelhead.

Never used this method before and know nothing about it.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance

Pop it or twitch it as it swings, simple as that...

Just swing it while making it twitch. Pretty straightforward. I've never really seen the right conditions for it, but if you see steelhead boiling or being otherwise very active, then's the time to do it. Sometimes you will even see steelhead taking naturals at the top, but this is rarer yet.

I"ve read a lot of reports this year of steelies taking stuff off the top, even saw a pic of a coho with a big foam dry in its chopper!

I'd sooner do that than do hard pops. If you jerked the fly out of the way and missed a strike, it could haunt your dreams for years.

I've heard it referred to as "skating the fly" more often.
