Thread: Arkansas Rainbow

Default Arkansas Rainbow (whoops I was wrong!!!)

    Hey guys,
On this past Friday I hooked and landed the largest rainbow that I have caught on the Little Red River in Arkansas. The big bow measured 28" and I have no idea how many pounds it weighed. Any guesses?
BTW: the fish was released safely back into its natural habitat

    Holy, Nice "bow".

Its actually a brown (The silver is deceptive, but its definitely a brown), either way its a hog. Great fish man!

I thought so too, but didn't want to be the one to say it. I had actually typed "It looks like a brown trout to me.", but being the first one to reply, I did not want to diminish his pride in sharing a great catch (plus, I'm new to the forum...) - It's a nice fish, regardless.

Here is the picture that made me think that it was a rainbow. The browns that I have caught in the Little Red River have all been much darker.

If you took a girth on it I can tell you pretty much exactly. If not let me know and I'll try and calculate it. I did this for a few fish on the forum here. In fact here is a link on how to do it.

I did not measure the girth. I was in such a hurry to release the fish and get a few pics before I let him go. Thanks for the link, If I ever get the chance at a fish like that again I will definitely measure the girth.

It looks a lot like the shiny lake-run browns up here in Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes. There's a lot of variability in shape too. Some are very deep-bodied and are commonly referred to as "football browns". They look a lot different from the resident wild and stocked browns in our streams. Identifying fish via photo can sometimes be tricky, but for me, it was the lack of spots on the "blocky" tail with a straight margin that told me it was a brown.
