I finally had an opportunity to get out and do some trout fishing. Unfortunately for me, my closest trout stream is 2+ hrs away. Needless to say, I don't get many opportunities to hit trout water.
Monday I left the house at about 6 am so I could be fishing by 8:30. I got to the waters edge and immediately liked the activity I was seeing. Lots of fish in pools darting back and forth feeding. I spent the first hour or 2 doing more scouting than fishing. I found the first pool that really looked promising. I tied on a rusty colored GRHE, cast upstream, watching my fly in the water column, see a fish is very interested, then, BAM...last possible second, it turns away. I cast a few more times through the pool. I can tell the fish are interested, they just aren't biting. I decided to tie on a streamer, Kelly Galloups Circus Peanuts. Again, I cast up stream, letting the streamer drift through the pool, stripping line here a there. I had one fish come from clear across the pool, made a hard run my streamer, just when I think I am going to be rewarded with a fish on....BAM....turns away. This was the theme for my entire day. Just about anything I tied on would get lots of looks from fish, but at the last second they would all refuse. I was using 6x tippet, leader length was 9-10 feet. Just not sure what I could have been doing to get the last second refusals.
I did manage to land one nice Brookie and missed another 3-4 fish. The one thing I did notice, was that all of the takes I had, they were quite soft. Barely, barely noticeable at all.
Other than being frustrated with all the refusals, it was still a great day on the water. Here's some pics.
