So I got a chance to fish a local stream today that was stocked 4 days ago. It started a little rough. I couldn’t find the trout at first. I found plenty of sunfish and creek chubs with my size 16 Mr Rapidan and 14 pheasant tail dropper. I came to a large pool and switched to a white marauder and started catching trout.

I caught several sunfish and 5 trout using this fly and then the action slowed down. So I switched to a squirmy wormy and it was on! I caught about 25 trout total and about 40 fish in all today. Including a SMB and a rock bass.

My experience when targeting the stockers is pretty similar. If they haven't been in the stream long, they won't be used to natural forage, so junk flies work best. If they eat a squirmy, they'll probably take y2k's and greenie weenies too. If you want to match the hatch for them, it would be a pellet fly...
