What's going on here?

Saw these markings on the bottom a brown I caught today, what could they be?

Those marking are UV flourescent bright. That's odd.

They've marked trout like that for studies. Look up florescent markings in trout online.

rfb's exactly right. It's a two-part liquid plastic that's injected under the surface of the fishes' skin. By varying the color combination and location (which side of the body, and near what fin) biologists can come up with a unique ID for each fish.

They're often used to look at individual growth or mortality.
