Orange and Turkey

Playing around with some burnt goose shoulder recently. Many tiers speak highly about it for spey fly hackles. Pulled one out of the package and scratched my head. "How the heck is a stem this thick wrapping around a hook?" I thought to myself. Well.....there are a few tricks. Not all of which I was able to duplicate.

There is a natural "split" running down the center. Tried the mashing them with the handle of a screwdriver and splitting them with the backside of a razor blade. This batch wasn't haven't it.

Stripping the fibers from one side and soaking the stem in warm water with some hair conditioner to soften the stiff stem did work. This made them much more manageable and made for a fine fly.

Love that turkey wing. The steelhead will gobble that one (sorry, couldn't resist the bad pun).
