Re: Rainbow Flies
That is kind of a tough question, but here are some ideas. I try to match the hatch where I'm fishing if I can see anything coming off. If I'm stillwater fishing it is mostly chronomids, Callibaetis nymphs/emergers, damsel flies, at day break or sunset I might try streamers. If on a stream and nothing is rising then I will probably go with hare's ear, pheasant tail, prince nymph or Copper John. Early in the season I might try a stonefly pattern.

Re: Rainbow Flies
Go to summer fly, depends where you enjoy summer. Look around! Might be a grass hopper. After the cast let it sit a moment while the rings disipate then barely twitch it. Don't just fish it on the surface either. They drown quit well. Enjoy.

Re: Rainbow Flies
Like others have said, I always observe what is in, on, or near the water and make my decision from there.

But, here are my favorites.

Midges - Fore and Aft
Mayfly - BWO
Caddis - Elk hair caddis
Stonefly - Orange Stimulator
Hopper - Dave's Hopper

Midge - Zebra Midge
Mayfly - Hare's Ear
Caddis - Sparkle Wing Caddis Emerger
Stonefly - Prince
San Juan Work - brown
Woolly Bugger - black

These probably make up 75% if my summer fishing. But if I only had one fly for the summer months - give me a parachute Adams in 12-22.
