For those of us that don't have waterproof chest packs/slings/backpacks, pick up a small silnylon dry bag to pack your jacket or extra layer in. Throw it in that, and it will stay dry even if your pack takes a dunk. Get a second to hold your lunch, phone, etc. drybag.jpg

Make your own tippet spool rack...take apart a ballpoint pen. Cute the body to desired length and run some para cord through it.

Here's a trick for quickly removing moss, grass, rock-snot, etc. from flies; best on dropper set-up's. If junks on the front fly only, wrap the line around each forefinger, apply tension, and snap it sharply with your thumbs. The junk fly's off. If on the bottom fly or both, hook each fly to each other and repeat with the two flies centered in the loop created. A guide friend of mine showed my this trick years ago. On those days when your dredging and fouling seeming every cast, it's the Bee's Knee's.

Long time reader, first time poster.....

    1. When fishing along a bank, in the fall, lined with black walnut trees, be sure to look up. The "seed", which is the size of a baseball, can put a major dent in your head when they drop....the tell tale sign, big green balls on the ground.

    2. Spray the inside of your vest pockets with ScotchGuard....helps to keep the contents in the pockets dry if the bottom of your vest gets wet.

I've actually worn a hard hat when walnuts are dropping.

Thanks for the second tip. Hadn't thought of that.

Rather than buy bear spray, ask at your motel if they have any to lend.
Many people buy it, but can't take it home on their flight, so they leave it with the motel.
That is, ASSUMING YOU WANT BEAR SPRAY!

To avoid unnecessary agitation pay no attention to any television commercial involving fly-fishing. They always get a critical something-or-other wrong, often very wrong.

To completely guard against this, get rid of your TV, or only watch DVDs.

Ain't it the truth. It's like the TV folks buy the gear and give a cameraman a chance to cast.

I pre-tie nymph rigs on a micro swivel and wrap them around champagne corks. Then I only spend about 30 seconds unwrapping and pulling out the memory rather than five or more minutes tying the rig. The swivel helps with tangles in the rig and I can connect it to the right length butt section that has a perfection loop on each end.

Thanks. I organize my rigs with foam pipe insulation. It's the elongate, usually gray, tubular stuff for insulating pipes. It's only a couple of bucks for a 6' length at the hardware store. I cut it into sections, wrap my rigs around each length, embed the hooks, and keep them them in ziplocks.
