I just saw a video where they demostrate tying a fly to the tippet using a nail knot tool. Anyone do this. Is it as strong as a clinch or improved clinch?

I would think going through the eye twice with this method would make for a very strong knot that will not slip.

If you are doing tandem or triple rigs and tying off the bend with one of these tools, you can leave the tag just long enough to grab with your hemostats to open up the knot for changing flies rather than retying the knot off the bend.

It would have to be awful quick to tie for me. Sometimes I'm changing flies about every 10-15 minutes using a clinch. (In a failed attempt to find what they're interested in):D

I would guess that it's stronger. It is just a better a knot, but a nail knot for a terminal knot to the fly? Way to much work. There are plenty of easy to tie knots (without the need of a tool) that are stronger than the Improved Clinch.

No special tool is needed to tie a fast clinch knot. Just use a hemostat.

For me, I like the double Davy knot, it is fast and you can tie it with very little waste and I hardly ever have a failure.

I've got to try the Clinch with my hemostat, that's pretty slick and thanks. I've used the Orvis Tippet Knot for an number of years now (tippet to leader) and have way less breakage than when I used a surgeon's knot.
