Just a guess: to keep the reel's weight centered over the reel seat.

I bought an XL back early summer I think it was. I have been very pleased with it. It is very nice, and you won't be disappointed. I like the drag on it, and it is a very well made reel. It has done very nice for me with my warm water fishing so far. It is a 5/6wt reel. Justin has some great gear to choose from.
