It depends on what the rod was built for. My 8.5 Granger is a DT5F. My 8.5 Pillipson is a DT6F. I typically use Cortland Peach DT's or Hook and Hackle. but I've been using Cortland Sylk on a 7.5 5WT. Wasn't sure I would like it but I really do. I have also use RIO's Selective Trout and like it. I use DT on all my bamboos and vintage fiberglass...they just seem to load better to me. I use wF on my Graphite rods.

Go to one of the local fly shops and try the different weights on your rod and see which one feels the best to you. I personally use both Cortland DT and the Wulff long belly triangle taper.

Sylk line was made especially for bamboo rods, though I use it on my Superfine. The line was very little memory.

Your 8'6" Japanese rod is probably a 6wt.... mine is
I fish one of the old model Cortland 333 lines on it
But if was in the market for a new line I'd get a Hook&Hackle High Floater
    $25... on sale
