20 pound Dacron backing will be fine.

12 pound Dacron backing is available, but hardly any shops stock it.

Your other options are super braided lines.

To be realistic, how often will you see your backing when fighting a fish?

Well Dennis has answered your question. Your reel instructions should tell you how much backing in ratio to line lenght. +or - a few yards. That and the guys at the shop will set you up just fine.

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.
