Fly lines have a level tip. Most are 6" long so the 8" loss is neglible. You have lost about 2" of the end taper and it won't be noticed.

It's happened to me a few times, mostly when I wash up in between rocks. I think you shoud be fine. Keep fishing.

When you folks lose a bit off the tip of a fly line, do you use something to seal it? I've used aquaseal and zap-a-gap, but am not sure if it's necessary.

I usually weld on a new loop so it seals up again. If you don't the tip will eventually take in water and go subsurface.

Taking on water is what I was worried about. I once tied a perfection loop in the fly line and then sealed it with aquaseal, but I think the perfection loop was a mistake. Now I tie a loop in a piece of mono and nail knot it to the line, then seal the end at the nail knot. How do you do the weld?

Here is a pretty good link for welding a loop. I will warn you that some of my fishing buddies swear against doing this but I haven't had one fail yet.
