Type of pattern wet, nymph, scud, sowbug
Originator of pattern if known
Tied and Submitted by peregrines
Level of tying experience needed to tie this pattern Beginner, a fairly simple pattern using basic tying skills
Materials listed in order of tie in:
Hook Your choice of wet fly, nymph or scud hook, size 14-18 Mustad 3399A size 16 used here
Thread Red or Orange, Uni 8/0 red here
Tail None
Flashback Medium Pearl Flashabou is standard. 2 strands of thinner fine Rainbow Holographic Flashabou used here.
Rib None
Body Ostrich 4-2 strands of ostrich herl in your favorite scud or sowbug colors. Gray, orange, olive, tan, pink, white are commonly used. In gray the pattern is often referred to as the “Gray Ray”. 3 strands of Hareline’s Orange Scud Ostrich herl here.
Head Red or orange thread
Special tying notes Super simple and deadly. Red or orange thread is said to be one of the keys to this pattern’s effectiveness. Tie in Flashabou and leave it extending off rear of hook. Tie in strands of ostrich herl, twist to form rope. Wind up shank and tie off herl. Pull Flashabou over back of herl body and bind down. Form thread head. Go fish. Because I used flashabou that was thinner than the medium size recommended, after locking down the flash over the back, I folded them back and locked down the tag ends and trimmed them ˝ the length of the shank.
Target species Trout
Fishing notes A super easy to tie and effective sow bug and scud imitation. Great for nutrient rich tailwaters like the Big Horn.

These are a must when fishing tail waters. Pink works great on the "horn"
