Special tying notes | An easy pattern to tie. Tie on thread, dub body from directly above bend up to front 1/3 of shank. Tie on hackles and form a dense hackle collar over front 1/3 of hook shank.
Target species | Trout
Fishing notes | Imitates dark winter caddis like Little Black Caddis (Chimera) and small winter stoneflies (Taeniopterix) and in smaller sizes it imitates small microcaddis (Dolophilodes). A staple on many New England streams.

I like a spikier hare's ear dubbing than shown here. Some tyers start the body in the hook bend, so that it curves. Some add a wire or tinsel rib, similar to a GRHE. Some clip the hackle so that the tips are bristlier. Any of those variations is optional.

With the clipped hackle, it's easy to skate the fly across the surface, then pull it under and fish it like a wet or emerger in the same cast.
