Jackster, I don't know about a Swiss connection with Maryat Reels but I know the first I heard about them was in a letter from George Gherke (famed distributor of the Abilene Hand Cream and carbon tetrachloride "floatant"). He wanted all to know that he was to be the exclusive importer of this reel from Japan and pre-delivery orders would be subject to special discounts. Well, I and a couple of fishing club friends took him up on this. Back then, the big Eastern fishing show was in Suffern, NY...long before the current Somerset Show. One guy,...I am going to call him Bob...went up to Gherke and said, "its is over a year since I gave you money, you have lots of reels in your show display, where are mine?" Gherke gave him a song and dance and Bob dragged him upstairs to a balcony overlooking the field house floor and started to push him over; "You lying sack of s--t, he bellowed, you have the reels and you are giving them to me now are I am throwing you to the show floor below!" By now Gherke, legitimately afraid for his life and Bob was a big guy, is screaming to his wife in the booth below; "GIVE BOB HIS REELS, AS MANY AS HE WANTS". Lee Wulff rushed up the stairs and grabbed Bob; "Don't do it, Bob, don't kill George, they will arrest you and you won't be able to fish the Beaverkill in the Spring!" With Wulff's encouragement, Bob calmed down and stopped hanging Gherke over the edge of the precipice. They went down to the Show floor and Gherke gave Bob the reels owed him.

I used mine for one season during which I accidental dropped it on the grass and dimpled its palming rim. I decided its bar stock was too soft an alloy and retired it to the elegant tin it came in. Since then, I have never used "Gink" again.

That's a pretty funny story, made best by Lee Wulff's reasoning.

    Dillon,

Dude congratulations on that purchase! Someday I'm going to do the same thing in the giant 4 1/4 size. They have them at Mountain View in Anchorage and I've gotta turn my back on the reel display cabinet when I'm there. I have had them out of the case and handled / marveled over them but just can't justify yet. The real problem may be that I would need several of them to balance out different rods.
