Actually, almost any line on any reel will work unless you go to extremes. By extremes, a 9wt DT on a 3wt reel may not fit. Always load enough backing to ensure a nice full spool when your line is loaded.

Personally I like a larger reel than is called for on all but my tiniest rods.

Like Ard said. Larger is always better for a reel, particularly if larger doesn't necessarily mean heavier (as with Orvis BBS reels). The concept of reel-rod balance is over-rated. While it's a nice mental concept, if you consider that in use a varying amount of line will be out (meaning that the weight of the reel will vary by that much line out), it will be seen that a perfect rod-reel balance will only occur with a fully-wound reel, not a very useful concept.
