Thread: Cabelas Wind River Reel?

  1. #1

    Default Cabelas Wind River Reel?

I am looking at getting a Cabelas Wind River Reel as an upgrade from my Cabelas Cahill Reel. Anyone had any experience with this reel? Good or Bad?

I have the Wind River reel on an 8 wt. A friend just gave it to me. It is a good drag, nice enough reel. I would buy one. Have no experience with the Cahill, so I cannot compare.

    HI,

I can't answer your question but wanted to mention that entering your location into your posting info may be helpful. 'Unknown' as a location does not help for members to understand what you may be fishing for or whether they are close to you.

Is your Cahill the older model Hardy Lightweight knockoff? If so, those are some pretty decent reels. The current wind river real is a good deal at the $20-$30 asking price. It's a bit heavy, and a cast, not machined reel. However, it does have a decent disc drag. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one and put on a loaner or beater rod.

    Just an FYI,
When you buy a re-branded reel from a place like Cabelas know that they don't stock spare parts and won't say who made the reel so that you can obtain them on your own.
If you loose a part or if that reel breaks down...... it's done.

Wind River reels are excellent for the price. I have all 3. They are heavy but they balance nicely on 9' rods. The drag is quite good. I've fought some large snook and redfish who were no match for the reel.

Compared to the current Cahill, there's no comparison. The Cahill drag is squirrelly and unreliable. I highly recommend the Wind River over the Cahill.

For $20, you can't find a better reel. If you're worried about spare parts, buy two (or 5).

That is true, but for me. a reel at $30. is a use and toss. Parts would probably cost as much as the reel, let alone spare spools.

That is one of the smaller that reel has taken.
