    Default Name that Reel Game

    Wanna play?

I got a mystery reel from a friend, but I need more info!

Came in a South Bend Box ... but it isn't a Finalist

    Reel face but no markings

    Exploded

'Throat' view. Spool throat is 7/8" deep by 7/8" wide. Spool: 3" dia.

Drag mechanism (not dual like the Finalist)

The only marking is "JAPAN" on the underside of the reel foot.

Looks like a South Bend .... Any ideas gang?

Rip Tide will be the last word on this but............

Japanese knock off mid to late 60's. Borrowing basic look from the South Bend #1200 and the drag system from the Pflueger 1495. Probably a pretty good reel. If it were real South Bend stock it would have the name on the spool hub and be stamped on the edge of the frame. My second reel was a South Bend 1200 circa 1968.

Guess : A rebuild and re paint of a Finalist using Pfleuger parts. Or a knockoff as seen by the unmarked white reel cap and the Japan marking . Otherwise ask Rip. If it is a knock off it's still a South Bend I think I have one.

LOL the way I fish (ie: badly) the reel's main role will probably just be a storage container for line.

    :-)

I also think it's an Olympic,I have A Couple Of Old Shakespeare Reels also made in Japan The Braking System & just about everything else is identical except yours has a prettier Paint Job & a nicer Handle they probably came from The Same Factory even though yours doesn't have any ID or markings..
I used The Shakespeares for many years with one of The First Shakespeare Rod which had a Hypolon Grip.
Even though I caught heaps of Fish on The outfit The Grip was really terrible with Fish Slime on it also The Reel Had a Terrible Ratchet noise which I lightened & changed by filing a little off The Spring Loaded Ratchet Pin.

Sure do! Got a 7 1/2' 4 piece Eagle Claw Trailmaster, circa 60's, that is in perfect shape.
Watch in the rod section later today!

(AND a box of flies that are probably the same age)
