Thread: What reel for orvis recon 10ft 4wt?

  1. Default What reel for orvis recon 10ft 4wt?

Okay so I just picked up a 10ft 4wt orvis recon rod. All this talk I hear about rod and reel balance has got me confused. I don't live close to any fly shops to put a reel on the rod and see how it feels so I'm open to your alls suggestions on the right reel. Any help would be great!

As a reference, my Hatch Finatic 5 plus with a modest amount of backing and a Mastery WF 3F balances my Orvis H2 10' 3 weight perfectly. You're going to love that rod......

Look at the new Orvis Battenkill Disc. Great reel for the money with a mid arbor design

Go with a bit of an oversized reel. Most long rods need a heavier reel than what is marked. On my 9'6" 5 weight Sage Pulse I use a 7-8 weight reel and it balances great.

I recently purchased a 10' 5wt Orvis Recon. I got the new Lamson Guru ll fly reel alone with Rio's Single Hand Spey line for mine. The combination kind of reminds me of one of the ultra light switch rods.

Thanks everyone for the info! So far from the sound of things a heavier weight reel is the way to go with a longer rod. Keep the suggestions coming!
