    Default Weight vs. Balance

This weekend I purchased a TFO Axiom 8wt (a rocket launcher of a rod) to be used for casting heavy bass bugs into cover, chasing steelhead, and for salt fishing reds and bonefish in time. I now need to put a reel on it. Here's my dilemna. The rod is bloody heavy, a full 5.5 ounces, and my first instinct was to lighten the overall load by shaving ounces on the reel. I realize, though, that I may need to rethink that in the interest of balance. For reference, I stuck my 6wt's Battenkill Mid Arbor III on it, 5.7 ounces, and the balance was still forward of the grip.

    Weight vs. balance. Any thoughts?

Balance, without a doubt. I fish heavier reels on cane and spey rods for that very reason... you'll notice an unbalanced rig before you notice the extra weight... IMO anyway.
    ... But a lifelong journey.

I choose fly rods the same way I do women, motorcycles, and cowboy boots...
go with what ever feels good, and keep on hand as many as I can afford

I have a tfo ticr x 9wt, and i use a Ross CLA #5 it is 8.1 ounces, and it seems well balanced. I like a heavier reel for the salt because i am usually casting for distance. I tend to sometimes false cast with up to 50' of line out to deeply load the rod and the extra reel wieght helps alot. A well balanced outfit is much more user friendly than a light unbalanced one. I would think if you are making short precision casts and not carrying alot of line wieght a lighter reel may be better, But i don't really fish a short game much.

Balance is the main key. And I'd hold off on fishing that Axiom to see if you like something else better. 5.5oz is pretty damn heavy for an 8wt.

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.
