I'm considering purchasing the Ross Vexsis reel which is a new reel this year for Ross. Has anyone out there used this reel and how do they like it? From what I've read it has some pretty neat features on it, but since it is so new I cannot find any reviews on it. Thanks for your help. I'll be using it for Steelhead fishing.

Thanks Blue Dun - I just read that review the other night and the one thing that they mention is that one must keep the reel very clean meaning it is not a reel that can take alot of grit in it which is something most reels can't take. I'm just a little worried about moisture freezing in it. I had this problem with a Orvis mid arbor - the drag just freewheeled. No adjustment. I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience with this reel. Thanks again buddy.

I have not had any experience with it, but I also looked into buying one. The spool release is pretty cool - really easy and quick to change spools. I thought that when I looked at it that the drag was sealed. The website; however, does not specifically state that it is sealed so I may be wrong about that. If it is actually sealed, then it shouldn't freeze up and freewheel on you. Again, maybe someone else could clarify if the drag is actually sealed.

That darned weight problem again! Maybe Ross should get back to the basics and stop trying to cram so many do-dads and so much hi-tech stuff into their new reels.
Gimme a simple, light weight click 'n pawl that is U.S. made and somewhat affordable and I'm sold.

better, but it only stands to reason that they need to keep selling in order
to stay in business.
The bicycle industry is no different. Every year it's something new, and the
previous year's components are discontinued. They also try to make systems
incompatible, forcing you to buy into the new system entirely.

Sure is. SRAM is even working up a new 10 speed MTB cog set up to try to make 9sp obsolete. Then there's bottom bracket standards, tapered steer tube forks, and lots more. Don't even get me started on 650B, its just silly.
or Campy 11 speed, Shimano and Campy electronic stuff and more.
I just want someone to make an efficient system without a chain!

I got this reel for Christmas and fished in 20 degree weather this spring with no problems, not positive if the drag is sealed though

The ross vexis is basically a heavier evolution with a little bit more heavy duty drag.

easier maintenance and cleaning. Based on the tolerances incorporated in
the drag design it is highly unlikely that silt and debris would migrate
into the internals of the drag. All of our reels are virtually
maintenance free and self-lubricating so there is no additional
lubrication in the reel to attract dirt or silt. If you have any further

I had a chance to play with it at the Sportsman Expo here in Denver, and is constructed very well, to be expected.
