    Smile Need some advice

Just returned from the local flea mkt with an old fiberglass rod. It's a Horrocks and Ibbotson 9' in really good condition. Wraps and guides are great , reel seat clean but whoever had it stained the entire cork brown . The cork is in good shape but I want to get the stain off . This is where I need advice from you guys that rebuild. Do I sand it and if so what grade of paper? Do I use a stripper to take the stain off? Or am I better off just redoing the cork? I paid $4 for it so I don't mind spending a few bucks . Just something I like about this stick. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Stripper is not gonna cut it. Sand with at least 80 grit to tear through the stain and find out how deep it has penetrated the grip. If you can get to bright cork without creating a diminutive diameter you then go to 180# and then on to a 300# to smooth it out like new.

Please keep in mind ... you can always take off more, but, you can't put any back. Go gently, slowly, and keep it moving!

I think he wants to get down to the bright cork Auntie, if so he's gonna have to take off until he sees cork. If that creates what I called "creating a diminutive diameter", then he's gonna be looking at a new grip I think.

Can always do a rattan grip! Not that I can help, I'm about to attempt my first. Looks great though.

    Hi William,

Can that be wrapped right over the cork if the sanding made the grip too narrow? If so there's an option.......

Again, I haven't done it yet (waiting for the rattan to arrive in the mail), but yes, you wrap it over to cork or another base. You sand the cork so that once the rattan is wrapped over the cork, the grip will be the desired width.

It's a fairly long full wells grip. I don't know if rattan will look so hot on it. I'm gonna get the sandpaper tomorrow and see how it goes. Worse scenario I'll recork it.

At the risk of commiting a moral flyrod sin I will recommend the X-pattern heatshrink wrap we use on surf rods. I think it actually feels better than cork. I've been considering it for one of my 9WTs but haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet.
