Default Mystic switch

The building section has been a bit slow lately so I thought I would post the latest off my bench. Its a Mystic 11'3", 7wt. switch rod. First Mystic blank I have built on. The new owner sent me the blank so it will be up to him to field test it.

Wraps: Ruby Red, turned into a nice Garnet with the finish.
Trim: Metallic Gun Metal Grey
Seat Lemke Titanium with a CA finished Black Ash burl insert dyed to match Amboyna
Guides: Snake Brand Universals, dark nickel
Handles: Mixture of rubberized, natural, natural burl, red burl and burnt corks

Great looking Rod!!!

That blank is perhaps just a bit lighter than a Rainshadow II spey blank (13'3" 7wt) I have and will be starting soon...and I have been thinking about that same colour for the wraps. Nice job.

Hey, while I love the grips...have you much experience with fishing the glossy grips? I mean, when wet and/or fish slimed (hopefully), do they get slippery?

Regarding the grips and seat....did you build them yourself or purchase them. I may be looking for that...um...look for my spey when i start it.

Again, great job on the build.

King Joe,
Thanks for the compliments. I build all my own handles, but I cheat a bit as I have a lathe I can shape them on without too much set up. As for the glossy handles being slippery when wet.... definately not. Not a bit of slip when wet.

I use several coats of Minwax Polyurathane wipe on finish on every saltwater rod I build. Protects the cork from the extremely harsh sand and salt conditions the rods see. Very simple to re-apply after a season in the salt. Just wipe another coat or two on.
