For those of you who have done clear wraps on fly rods, I have a question. After much reading, it sounds as though when pursuing clear wraps that the wraps themselves need not be perfect. Using silk with its much smaller gauge, it is harder to get the wraps perfect prior to applying finish. For instance, sometimes you get those gaps where the end of the guide foot "pokes through" the wraps, where the thread does not ride up the guide foot easily. Is it necessary to close up those gaps before applying the first coat of clear finish? Or does the choice of clear wraps render those wrapping mistakes invisible, along with the thread? I have wrapped with the YLI Silk 212 Natural, and understand the dilution of the finish in order to achieve the clear wraps; it is the condition of the wraps themselves that I wonder about.
