Rod action
I have been looking at alot of rods in catalogs. Most builders do not state the action. So how does one tell without seeing the actual product?

Re: Rod action
seajay: There really isn't a good answer to this, that is why everyone recommends that you actually try the rod in YOUR hands before purchasing. Orvis has a flex index that they have been using for years which is a big help to repeat customers. If you have purchased a rod from them before and say it had a mid flex 8.0 and you were going to buy a new rod from them you could be pretty certain that if you picked the same flex index it would cast like your previous rod. The industry as a whole doesn't have something like that, instead they have general terms like medium action, medium fast action, fast action. The problem is that those are pretty general terms. If you bought a rod from one manufacturer that was say medium fast, there is no guarantee that another manufacturer's rod would cast the same even though they call it the same.

Re: Rod action
Curious where you are looking. I've found most rod manufacturer's are very forthcoming with their rod actions. As Larry says, each manufacturer has their own flavor in terms of action. This is no different that with spinning or casting rods. My Sage rods tend to run fast, my St. Croix rods tended to run a bit slower for a given action.

Give us a hint on what you are looking for, and we might be able to help you out. The bottom line is test casting a rod before purchase is a necessity if you are looking to drop several hundred dollars on a rod. It is one the major benefits offered by your local fly shop, and it is a good reason to pay a little extra to give them your business.
