HI!
I am the founder of REYR gear, just a normal guy, and came up with a new travel rod idea after thinking that is simply could be improved after getting on planes with large tubes or not having a rod always rigged up in the car or backpack.
Check out what we got and let me know what ya think! its different...
My brutally honest opinion is that it's different all right and not in a good way. The problems are what I do not see in the video.
1.
How is the rod first rigged up with the leader threaded up the inside of the rod tubes? I see no way to do that without some method of disassembling the rod.
2.
How about the fly line to leader junction. The standard method of a
loop to loop connection will not fit into the rod tip very easily, so if you need to change leaders, you need to cut off the tip of the fly line and do a nail knot to the fly line or cut off the leader leaving the butt section for a nail knot.
3. Since the fly line is inside the tubular fly rod,
the entire line slides along the inner surface of the rod. This increases friction and limits casting distance since there is no shooting of fly line. I noticed there was no line shooting on your demo.
4. There are
ledges and edges of of tube on the inside of the rod tube since the smaller diameter tubes are snugged up against the larger diameter tubes. These “edges” or steps are the thickness of the rod tub and I presume they have squared off sharp corners over which the fly line travels. When a fish is pulling on the line and takes the line out, it will pull the line over these sharp corners and
will abrade the line The reason that chromed snake guides are used on fly rod is to minimize the surface contact.
This seems to me to be the worst of both worlds = maximum surface contact over a rough surface since there is no way to polish or smooth coat the INSIDE of a tubular fly rod. I believe that is why there is no false casting with extending and shooting of lines demonstrated.
Note the fly line to leader junction below has no loop since a loop will not easily fit into the rod tip and through the small diameter tip.
