I certainly don't know him, but I've talked to him a couple of times (when fishing the Holy Waters I probably eat lunch at Gates every day, those potato chips are amazing, and so often pop into the shop too) and he seems like a terrific guy, he and the staff have always been very helpful. I did buy that book before my first trip there. I enjoyed it very much.

Sometimes my fishing buddies and I agree on a rod and line, sometimes not entirely. But the YA staff seems remarkably in tune with George. Dillon and I have a good bit of overlap in our outfits but far from identical. While we fish rods from several makers we both have a penchant for Sage rods with sharp tips...YA does not.

    I have a Z-Axis 5 wt, 8' 6", not a 9'. It's also a 2-piece rod. Both the 2pc and 4pc were available when I bought this one.

This Fall while waiting for salmon to show up in my local river, I was using it instead of the 10' 5 wt ONE that I usually use there. It had been a while since I used it anywhere. I found I could cast it just as far and with the same accuracy as the ONE, so I just kept using it until the season ran out.

I have another Z-Axis, a 7 wt 10 footer. That mostly gets used in saltwater when I'm not expecting giant fish.

    My 5 weight choices:

    Power-- Zenith 9' 4 piece

    All-round-- Zenith 8' 10" one-piece

Presentation-- Orvis Helios2 8' 6" mid-flex (although the 9' Sage ZXL is a close second)

These models are so nice that I have lost interest in following the new releases.

I have a lot of love for the z-axis in single and two hand applications, a couple years ago I was bidding on eBay for a few two hand and single hand rods. Ultimately I prefer Sage`s modern offerings better. But I get the whole cult following and I still might add a few to the collection especially in two hand applications, I could fish a z-axis the rest of my life and be happy.

While I never really meshed with the 590-4Z,(prefer the XP 590-4) I really, really like the 490-4Z and prefer it to the XP 490-4. If I could find a mint 490-4 Z-Axis for around the $400 mark I would jump on it!

The Z-Axis 8110 DH is one of my favorite rods.
